2026 Updates: Ms Nakandi Winifred outlines her plan as she eyes Kampala District Woman MP seat on NUP ticket

Ms. Nakandi Winifred, a former Vice Guild President of Kyambogo University and currently the Executive Director, Mschiana Uganda, will contest for Kampala District Woman MP seat under the National Unity Platform ( NUP) party ticket, we can confirm.

Ms Nakandi is set to battle for the seat with incumbent Hon. Shamim Malende among others.

Ms Nakandi Winifred is a global advocate for dignified menstruation and has previously sat on several panels in Africa, Europe and the US to discuss women issues and gender equality. She advocates for a stage of inclusivity where women can be included in the conversation of policy making, and it is this aspiration that is driving her to make a political decision to contest for the seat in the 12th Parliament .

“I am advocate for women’s rights and this is why I’m showing up for leadership at legislative level. I intend to contribute to policy making and improve the existing policies to ensure that women have a voice in the society,” says Winifred Nakandi. “I will be a key voice for all women and I will speak for that marginalized girl child who feels sidelined from the national cake. My experience in civil society is rich enough to corroborate with legislative duties,” she adds.

Nakandi says right throughout her political career that she began as a student leader in Kyambogo, she was able to empower fellow women and encourage them to compete for leadership positions.

“I know that what a man can do, a woman can do better,” she exclaims. “I enrolled so many of my fellow female students to aspire for GRC positions and indeed they all competed and a vast number of them defeated their male counterparts,” she adds.

Previously, Winifred competed for the highest student leadership office and she won the presidency of the Uganda National Students’ Association though her tenure was mired by sabotage from opponents who dragged her institution to court and an injunction against their inauguration was issued by court and she found herself as the first UNSA president to end a term without executing her mandate. This stalemate is attributed to Nakandi’s consistency as she declined to betray the institution for state favours and she chose to align with the expectations of her voters.

Nakandi is a well respected leader on the global stage and she has been able to travel around the world, an experience that Kampala locals will largely benefit from as she has capacity to lobby for effective service delivery. She currently runs as organization that supports women and girls in education, health and economic empowerment, with a tremendous track record in ending gender based violence, teenage pregnancy, and school dropouts amongst girls in several parts of the country.

Winifred has trained young women with vocational skills and this is visible at her facility in Komamboga, Kawempe Division where women are skilled in tailoring. Nakandi is also an advocate for menstrual hygiene and she has distributed reusable sanitary pads to over 30,000 girls and women all over the country.

Her decision to rival the incumbent Shamim Malende within the National Unity Platform party has been hailed by political analysts who believe that the Kavule based party is now attracting a cream of experienced former student leaders. “Nakandi is a practical leader whose experience will be of great value to NUP,” Mugerwa Patrick, a former Kyambogo student says.

With her coming, many see her as favourite to take the seat from Hon. Shamim Malende whose term of office has endured turbulence of sickness and state battles.

Nakandi together with her team is on the ground mobilizing for support ahead of the tough battle. Watch the space!!
